Javier Hernandez is a Research Scientist at the Affective Computing group of the MIT Media Lab and Principal Investigator of the Emotional Navigation and Onsite Stress Measurement special interest groups. In addition, Javier is founder and CEO of Global Vitals LLC, an MIT Media Lab spin-off with the goal of democratizing physiological sensing.

Javier’s research is focused on the development of emotionally intelligent tools to further the understanding of humans while fostering greater health and quality of life. In particular, Javier has made several contributions in the context of daily life stress and the use of technology to improve its measurement, understanding, and management. His work has been covered by a wide variety of media outlets such as National Geographic, The Economist, and The Times, and has received several recognitions such as MIT TR 35 and several best paper awards. He often provides guest lectures at MIT and other universities, and speaks at a wide variety of conferences and venues.

Javier received a B.S in Computer Systems Engineering in 2004 and an M.S in Information Technology in 2007 at Ramon Llull University (Barcelona, Spain), an M.S. in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in 2010 at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA), and a Ph.D. in Media Arts and Science in 2015 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, USA).
